This week was Kindness Week! Our counselors, Ms. Cobbs, Ms. Raquedan, and Ms. Rich, as well as our SCA, made this week extra special with events to remind us of the importance of being kind. Friday was extra special with coffee and donuts!

 

Kings’ Gambit – Two OP Students Win at Chess

On February 12, 2022 Samuel Smaltz and Gian Andre Fernandez attended a Prince William County chess tournament and placed third for Osbourn Park HS! Great job Gentlemen!

 

Prince William Chamber and OmniRide Transportation Initiative for Student-Workforce

The Prince William Chamber of Commerce’s Education & Workforce Committee, along with OmniRide, developed a youth transportation initiative in partnership with the 3-School Divisions in Prince William County and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). The purpose of this youth-based initiative is to provide transportation resources for High School students, students enrolled in workforce initiatives under Career & Technical Education (CTE), as well for students enrolled at the two (2) NOVA Campuses in Manassas & Woodbridge. Debbie Jones, President & CEO, Prince William Chamber said, “The Prince William Chamber is proud to partner in this collaborative program. We are supportive of all initiatives that develop tomorrow’s workforce for our region.”

CPR Graduation Requirement

On Friday, April 1st, the Health and Physical Education Department will be providing a CPR “chest compression” practical. Correctly performing this CPR standard is part of the graduation requirement. This session is for Juniors and Seniors only.

 

Leadership Class: Self-Defense Seminar: LLS Fundraiser

Are you interested in gaining confidence while learning self-defense techniques? Come join the Leadership Class on Saturday, March 19th in the OPHS gymnasium for a Self-Defense Seminar! All proceeds will be donated to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). This event will be two, one-hour classes, Women’s Only self-defense at 10am and General self-defense at 11am. Each class is $20. If you are interested, please fill out this Self-Defense Seminar form, there are also flyers posted throughout the school with QR codes that lead to the same form. This is to gauge interest for the event ONLY, this is not the final signup form. A separate signup form will be posted closer to the March 19th date.

 

World Languages

Spanish Honor Society is running a Mexican Flag Scavenger Hunt this month around the building in honor of Mexican Flag Day (celebrated on Feb 24), with a gift card prize to the first person who finds all 15 flags. Please stay tuned to the OPHS Student announcements for the start date!

The World Language Department is participating in the division-wide World Language Poster Contest ahead of the National Foreign Language Week (March 6-12). Ask your World Language teacher how you can participate in this year's theme of "Celebrate Humanity Through Language"! Due date for poster submissions here at OP will be February 23rd. . The flags will be posted Friday the 18th after school, and the Hunt starts Tuesday the 22nd when you arrive in the morning! Look for more info in the OPHS Student canvas announcements.

 

History

In EPF they are learning how to file taxes and looking at the tax implications of gig work such as being an Uber driver. In World II, they just created illustrative analogies to explain the systems of Capitalism, Socialism, and Communism based off the analogy of two cows. Students illustrated the systems using things like fast food restaurants, apple orchards, aliens, etc.

 

Language Arts News

The English department is holding sessions during the virtual OPHS+ tutoring sessions for Writing SOL review: 2/28 (5-7PM). Students may arrive any time during the session and stay as long as needed.

The literary magazine is looking for submissions for the 2022 edition! We have moved our submission deadline to February 22. For more information contact Ms. Lozier or Ms. Herbst.

 

Athletics

Congratulations to our Girls Basketball District Champions!  Come out and support them again on Monday night 2/21 for the Region Quarter-Final vs. Forest Park.  Tip-off is at 6:32 PM in the OP Gym.  Tickets are $8.00 and must be purchased online at GoFan.co.  No cash will be accepted.

Good Luck to our Boys Basketball team as they travel to Woodbridge High School on Monday night 2/21 for the Region Quarter Final.  Tickets are $8.00 @ Woodbridge HS.  Game starts at 7:00 PM.

 

Spring Tryouts begin on February 22nd and continue through the week. Specific tryout times for each spring sport are listed at www.opjackets.org. Any additional questions can be directed to Ms. Mohl in the main office.  Any student trying out must have a current physical and concussion training on file with the school.

 

Please support the OP Baseball Fundraiser on Feb 25 from 4-10 pm at the Manassas Velocity Wings.  You must mention it's for the OP Baseball Team.
